Japanese Knotweed Indemnity Policy

Council loses massive £300k due to the spread of Japanese Knotweed. This is what has happened in 2017 where a man has won a £300K fight against officials for damages. Engineer Mark Davies, 38, found that his garden had been invaded with Japanese Knotweed. The Knotweed had overtaken his back garden from an unused railway line which then spread into his garden in South Wales. Due to this, he has been granted £4,900 damages from Bridgend County Borough Council, who face a £300,000 legal bill. According to Mr Davies, even when the Knotweed had been treated, the presence of the plant has damaged the overall value of his house as it has prevented him from doing things such as putting up a shed, landscaping or building anything in his garden. Japanese Knotweed is known for its capability to spread and cause damage to buildings, it is also difficult and expensive to remove.

Japanese Knotweed is an aggressive, fast-growing type of weed that can grow up to 10cm each day. The problem that Japanese knotweed causes is that it can invade properties, the roots of the knotweed can get through the smallest of spaces in concrete and masonry, which could result with them posing serious threats to building foundations and drains.  Japanese Knotweed in your home can cause many serious problems, for example the removal can be costly due to it requiring extensive removal. Alongside the cost to remove, it can also make it difficult to sell your home and your home could also be significantly undervalued. The Japanese Knotweeds appearance can be hard to spot as the appearance changes throughout the year as the plant nurtures through the seasons. People often say that it looks like asparagus.
